PRP Joint Injections

We are now offering PRP Joint Injections in the shoulders and knees. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy uses injections of a concentration of a patient’s own platelets to accelerate the healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints. In this way, PRP injections use each individual patient’s own healing system to improve musculoskeletal problems.

This treatment uses your own platelet-rich-plasma to accelerate the healing process of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints.

Your blood is drawn and spun down in a centrifuge to separate out the plasma from the red blood cells and then injected with a needle into the affected joint. PRP contains your body’s own proteins and growth factors that assist in the removal of dead and damaged cells and signals the body to repair the injected area. Ultrasound imaging is sometimes used to guide the injection.
This results in reduced inflammation, pain, and a speedier recovery.

Do the injections hurt and how many injections are needed per joint?

We mix your PRP with Lidocaine, a local anesthetic, so after the the initial poke, you may feel pressure and minimal discomfort. There is only one entry point per joint.

Will my insurance cover this service?

No, currently insurance does not cover this service. Many of our clients have success using HSA accounts to cover services at Cheeky- check with your plan’s specific requirements. We also offer several financing programs (Cherry, PatientFi) and gladly accept CareCredit.

How long do the injections last and will I need more than one?

This varies from person to person and depends a great deal on the injury and/or disease process of the affected joint. Typically, best results are achieved with a series of 2 injections spaced a minimum of 4 weeks apart. People have relief anywhere from several months to a year, but again this depends if it is an acute injury or a chronic issue.

Is there any downtime after getting PRP joint injections?

You will want to avoid vigorous exercise and heat exposure for at least 48 hours after your treatment. The injected joint may feel swollen and slightly sore for 24-72 hours until the PRP is absorbed by the body. You will want to avoid Aspirin, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve (all non-steroidal and steroidal anti-inflammatory agents) If you experience discomfort or pain, you may take Tylenol or other Acetaminophen products. You may apply ice as needed for comfort after the procedure.
